Times have changed. The Humans are no longer the most dominant race to walk the earth. Their homes have been taken over by intruders and the humans have disappeared altogther, herding themselves into secret underground groups in an effort to escape 'the operation'. The don't want to undergo the simple process which takes away their freedom and transforms them into the enemy... a Soul. The epitome of different with their perfect skin and their even scars tracing the backs of their necks. Their reflective silver eyes are the first things to raise anger and fear in the minds of the humans. However, their time of secrecy is running out. Every day more and more humans are disappearing, sent to Healing Facilities where they are changed into the things that they hate the most.
Few humans are left, hiding away from the world only to come out once and a while to conduct a raid for supplies. The Souls are aware that they haven't captured every human. They know that their work is far from done. Thats what they have the Seekers for.
Melanie Stryder has been caught. In her efforts to escape from the clutches of the Seekers sent to turn her over to the Healers, she has merely walked herself right into a trap. Now she is no longer left alone in the safety of her own mind. She has been invaded, taken over. Wanderer has been assigned to this rebellious human in the hopes of cracking through her complicated mind and discovering the hiding place of the rest of the rebellious human population. But Wanderer, or Wanda, has come across a few problems. She can't seem to get Melanie to forfeit control of her mind. The Soul can control her Hosts body just fine, but she can't take it all to herself when Melanie refuses to leave. What is a Soul to do with a disobedient human mind?
Feeling sympathy for Melanie and curiosity in her life before the insertion, Wanda allows her Host to lead her to a colony of humans hiding underground. She is desperate to find Jared and Jamie, two humans who she cares for so much yet knows nothing about other than what Melanie has shared with her. Uncle Jeb has accepted her into the colony, a little skeptical about the silver eyes which reflect the light back to him but still confident that Melanie will come back. Jared is furious, refusing to look at Wanda and Mel with any other expression than Hatred. But Jamie is more curious than anything, never refraining from asking Wanda a question or two about being a Soul and about where his sister has disappeared to. The rest of the colony has grown curious too, accepting Wanda as a teacher but still skeptical about how much trust they can place in her. Wanda and Mel are beginning to realize that in order to survive in this colony and gain back Jared's trust, they are going to need to coorperate with one another and present themselves as a strong, united front.
