Seven years have passed since the discovery of vampire hybrids due to the birth of Renesmee Cullen. Nearly matched in numbers, the Volturi stood down all those years ago, retreating back to Italy to avoid a potentially fatal battle, much to Caius’ dismay. But true evil never rests, it only waits. Upon his covens return to Volterra, Caius began to study the difference between his old rivals the children of the moon and Quileute shapeshifters with great interest. The phenomenon of imprinting proved to be quite fascinating to him, as it revealed not only the existence of shapeshifters, but inevitably the existence of vampires to the wolves’ human mates.
Which brought the question…how many hybrids were utilizing their ability to fit in amongst humankind and revealing their true natures as well? Could an abomination with the choice to live amongst the human world or their world be trusted to exist? No. Caius’ studies proved the Halfling race to be "genetically flawed", "unclean", and "fit for extermination". To be efficient Aro and his brothers have ordered a mass genocide of the race; the objective is to collect all of the Halflings and dispose of them in a vampiric holocaust. Renesmee is one of the first to be seized, taken to Volterra to await her execution along with the others of her kind.
Meanwhile, her family and imprint, Jacob have become privy to her abduction. After discovering the plans of the Volturi they are forced to make some very quick decisions if they hope to stop this mass murder before it takes place. Edward and Bella venture to Romania, seeking out the vampire’s Stefan and Vladimir, who are rumored to be cultivating a coven of their own. Rose and Emmett head to Denali, while Alice and Jasper seek out the American Nomads and the Amazon Coven.
The Egyptians want no part of the Cullen’s crusade, but Carlisle is hopeful that meeting with the Irish Coven directly will gain their loyalty. Meanwhile Jacob follows the legends of werewolves throughout Europe, seeking the Children of the Moon, whom he hopes will join him to fight a common enemy. In the end they decide that the Volturi’s time as rulers of their secret society has ended; the only issue now is do they have enough allies on their side to cast them down?
