Hell On Earth
Esme rocked back and forth on the edge of the cliff her eyes tightly shut, as the wind wrapped itself around her body in a comforting embrace. The sea lapped gently against the edge of the cliff base welcoming her into its icy depths. Esme’s hair blew gently around her face tickling her nose but she paid no attention to it, fore she felt so much pain not just physically from giving birth a few days before but mentally the pain was too much. Her body ached and her eyes where heavy and tired, but she knew the pain would not last much longer.
Pieces of her life flashed before her eyes as she prepared herself to take that one step that would release her from this world in which she only knew pain. The only bit of love she had known had died with her son, and now she would return to him. It was her place; a mother should be with her child.
Suddenly she was sixteen years of age and had her whole life ahead of her, that hope that she would soon find her handsome prince was as certain as the sun would keep rising and setting. She was high in the trees watching the sun fall behind the farthest hill when the branch she was sitting on broke and she fell to the ground. A sharp pain shot up her leg and she quickly descended into darkness.
Esme opened her eyes and gazed out into the ocean it was almost dark now, soon no one would be on the beaches below and if anyone was to find her body the next day it would be too late. She pondered what they’d put on her death certificate would it be ‘Suicide’ or ‘accidental death’?
Esme when she awoke found herself on her bed staring into the eyes of a complete stranger. Yet it was those eyes that had fascinated her so, she’d never seen eyes like it, they where an almost golden colour. The owner of the eyes smiled gently at her as he explained what had happened, but Esme couldn’t take it in, she was infatuated with the owner of the eyes. He moved about her room with a God like grace and his voice to her sounded like the sweetest music. After he had left Esme promised herself she would never marry unless the man she met made her feel the way Dr Cullen had made her feel that day.
It wasn’t long now the sun was almost set which would guarantee that no one on the beaches below would see her fall and attempt the heroic deed of saving her. And then she would see her son again, she would be able to hold him in her arms and press him close to her breast protecting him from the horrors of the world. She had watched her child in pain, the medication the doctors had given him where useless as the lung infection worsened and she had not slept for days unable to take her eyes off the slowly dying child. Now she couldn’t wait to fall into the arms of slumber as her aching eyes closed to the image of the last sunset she was to witness.
Esme was nineteen years old and it was her wedding night, her eyes widened as her husband entered the room half dressed and intoxicated with drink. “Ahhh my lovely bride” he said leering towards her spilling whiskey from the bottle he held in his right hand. Esme cried out with fright retreating to the corner of the room hoping he’d leave her be but she was not to be so lucky. He approached her menacingly his face becoming redder as he took in his wife cowering from him. “How dare you Woman!” he barked striking her across the cheek, tears flowed down her face as she felt the sting of his strike and she turned her face from him closing her eyes hoping to shut his image out. He grabbed her by her hair dropping the whiskey on the floor he sneered “I’ve waited for you for months, I gave you the perfect wedding and now you think you can deny me my rights as your husband” Esme yelped reaching out to try to prise his fingers from her hair but she was no match for him as he threw her onto the bed and she descended back into darkness.
She opened her eyes as the last ray of sunlight vanished from the horizon and darkness fell. This was the moment she had been waiting for, the moment from which all this pain and suffering would end and she would finally be free. Taking one last breath she stepped forward and plunged into the waters icy depths.
She was in the hospital her body ached and she was exhausted but she didn’t care as she heard the cries from her child as the nurse cut the umbilical cord and wrapped the child in a blanket, Esme reached out to take the child that cried for the comfort of its mothers arms and brought the child close to her chest as she gazed lovingly at the little face. “It’s a boy” the nurse said with a smile before leaving the room to get a doctor to check on Esme. Esme gazed down at the tired baby, it had stopped crying and was now gazing curiously back at her, he had big brown eyes and small tufts of matted hair on his head. Esme smiled as she let her finger trace the child’s cheek softly “Hello Thomas…”

Mourge duty. This was the worst night of the week for Carlsile Cullen not only because it was boring, but because he had to see any patients he had not been able to save down in the dark little hole. Sitting on a small stool in the corner of the cramped room holding a copy of the Illiad in his hands he read contently, for the moment at least, and tried not to breathe for the smells. The stench, oh! the stench was pretty bad down there no matter how cold the room was. To a human everything would smell fine and dandy, but to his super senses the roting bodies were like air-unfresheners. Moving to the open window for a little frresh air Carlisle finally let himself breathe.
That's about the time when the ambulence pulled into the parking lot above. The siren was on and medics were shouting trying to save the person they were bringing in. He watched, thinking about what could possibly make such a commotion, and then the doors were opened. Immediatly the strong alluring scent of human blood reached his nostrils, but having worked as a doctor it had next to no effect on him. Yes, his mouth did fill with a bit of excess venom, but what was that compared to what some of his kind would do in his place.
"Jumped off a cliff.... some boy saw her.... Esme I think.... yeah, the one who lost the baby.... poor darling.... never thought it would end so soon...."
The words swirled around as they reached his ears. He had known an Esme once. She had been beautiful, full of spirit, and someone who looked as though she was going to suceed in life. After she had married it seemed as though she was always locked away somewhere. That husband of hers.... everyone knew he beat her, but no one would do anything. And then the thought slammed full force into his mind. This could be the same Esme.
Snapping back into reality he turned on his heel to go and find out what was going on and who exactally was hurt, but he never got more then two feet. It was the silence that alerted him that something was wrong. No more medics were yelling, no more people talking. It seemed as though everything was silently awaiting two words. Quietly stepping back to the window Carlisle strained to hear the words, and when he did something seemed to drop within him.
"She's dead."
Footsteps followed and were headed towards the stairs of the morgue. Going back to his stool with lightning speed right before the door opened he looked as though he had not heard a thing. The only difference is that the smile given to the men carrying the stretcher with the covered body on it was fake, but well practiced.
"Jimmy, Charlie. Just put that over there on the examining table."
It took an effort just to say those words knowing what he was about to see, but he did and to the humans he seemed totally normal.
"Well, have fun with this one Dr. Cullen. She jumped off a cliff after losing her baby boy. She didnt have a chance, poor thing."
Nodding to them as they left Carlisle moved and uncovered the girl. Sure enough it was Esme, the artistic spunky girl he had treated for falling out of a tree not so long ago, and she was dead. Or so he thought. Thump-------thump thump-------Bending down and putting a ear to her chest Carlsile could only hope. Then when it came again there was no hesitation. Lifting her gently into his arms he began to go out the door. Then, realizing he had to finish his work he sped around the small room, writing a short report, signing a few things, and finally using another girl's broken body to replace that of Esme's. She was a Jane Doe case so no one would miss her, espically since the casket would be closed at the funerals anyway.
Then, without further ado, Carlisle was speeding out of the morgue to his home on the outskirts of town thanking God, at least what he thought of as God, that it was already dark. When he reached the house he simply kicked the door in, not waiting to bother with the handle. It was dark and silent so Edward was still out at his "job" which was a good thing as he would not agree with what was about to happen. Laying the bloodied broken girl on his own bed on the second floor he hesitated for only a second before leaning down and softly biting into the flesh on Esme's neck.

Hell On Earth
After Esme hit the water she was unaware of anything else around her, she was blissfully at piece, holding the child she had lost close too her. There was no going back to that world that had been so cruel to her. Esme was unaware of the young boy who had come across her body as he walked his dog, she was unaware of being taken to the hospital, she was unaware of the strong arms that took her frail and broken body and raced across town to the owners home.
What she was aware of was the searing pain that started in her neck and coursed around her body, it was like nothing she had ever felt before as it reached her fingers. It was the worst kind of pain she had even felt and Esme had felt all types of pain in her lifetime. The pain became stronger and she felt as if her whole body were on fire, the pain pulled her away from her happy images of Thomas in her arms. She couldn’t think about anything but the pain.
Was this hell? Esme thought as she tried to cry out in pain, as she tried to move to shake the pain off her. But she couldn’t move. Her body felt so heavy as if it was lead. All she had wanted was for the pain to stop and now it was a hundred times worse. This was God punishing her for committing a sin and taking her own life. And now she would never see Thomas again. Was she damned to spend the rest of eternity like this? In unbearable pain? Esme lay there thinking about this, for how long she didn’t know, all she knew was it felt like she had been in pain for years. Then the pain started to build up, it shot around her body causing it to tingle before the sensation moved to her heart, she could feel her heart shudder under the stress of it. As the pain became unbearable Esme tried to scream but with no avail. Then suddenly her heart spluttered and stopped.
The pain was gone, she had felt her heart stop beating and yet she was still thinking, was she still alive? Esme was aware that the feeling in her body had come back; she stretched out her fingers and curled her hand up. Her thoughts and memories were all confused and blurry, she could see faces but they were blurred and she didn’t know who they belonged to. Certain events appeared in her mind, but again she wasn’t sure when they had occurred.
Esme sensed something move near her and her first reaction was to be afraid as she instinctively flicked her eyes open to observe her surroundings.

As soon as the blood entered his mouth Carlisle immediatly made himself think of something else. The most convineient thought was how royally pissed off Edward was going to be when he came home to find another vampire, or changing vampire, under the roof he shared with another already. The thought was no enough to stop the thirst and although Carlisle was trying to break away he didn't seem t have the will power. It was then he started to remember when he first met Esme.
The house was bigger than he expected. It was nice and there was a large tree in the back yard, presumably the one the girl fell from. Walking into the room of the unconcious patient he did the routine, but when her eyes opened and she began to talk was when he was captivated. She wanted to be an artist, and the delicate fingers and gracefulness of her manner sugested that she could actually fufill her dream. She had captivated the young (or old) doctor and had never fully left his mind.
On that thought Carlisle pulled away, disgusted with himself for even thinking that he could kill someone. He had to have the will power to stop, and now that he changed two humans he knew that he could. He also hoped that this bite would work the same way the last one with Edward had. Staring down at the girl, Esme, he noticed for the first time that she was lying in a very unnatural position. It looked like both of her legs were broken, and there was a large gash on her head. Her arms and back were bruised, but the most insignificant bruise was the one that caught his attention the most.
There on her sheek was the faint outline of a handprint. With further inspection the hand was definantly a male hand, and this had been no accident. This was where every man that abused his wife hit their women. It was slightly red and looked as though it would be tender to the touch. And that is where the first shudder seemed to run through her body.
He knew the venom was working because the blood was not flowing anymore. After setting her bones back in the natural position he pulled up a chair and waited. He waited for her to scream, to writhe in pain and try and sit up. He waited for her to yell out for someone to stop the pain, to make it go away. But she didn't. She didnt make a sound and other than the tiniest shiver she didn't move an inch.
By morning Edward knew about the woman. As predicted he was angry and he left the house and said he would not come back until the "thing" as he called it was totally transformed. Carlsile also called in sick to his work saying he had the stomache flu, but that he was fine and could take care of himself. The second day was misery. Waiting for something when nothing would happen. Nothing. Absoutly nothing.
By the third day he was beginning to wonder if the change was really happening or if she had been too close to death to save. But, when her hearbeat got faster, like hummingbirds were flitting around her chest, he knew the end was near. Then it stopped. There was silence, and the moment seemed to last for an eternity, but she finally moved. She stretched her fingers and finally her eyes fluttered open. He moved foreward and stood over her, not too close, but close enough for her to see him and not be surprised. The change in her was amazing. There was no more bruises, no more blood or broken bones. There was no handprint on the side of her face, and now there never would be again. Her eyes got to him, just as Edwards had. The redness was frightening, but the only emotions on his face were serene, and a touch of caution.

Hell On Earth
Esme was surprised by what she saw as her eye lids fluttered open, she had never seen the world like this before. Everything was so clear; she would see the dust in the air and every speck of dirt that sat upon the ceiling. She marvelled as she heard the birds outside singing, it sounded as if they were right in the room next to her, she could hear the grasshoppers and some movement in the house around her. It was astounding she thought; she’d never imagined a human could see the world like this.
She focused on the male stood in the room with her, she would have been afraid only his face stirred some distant memory and she knew she need not fear him. His features were soft and mirrored the gentle look on his face, he had stunningly blonde hair that swept across his forehead. Her enhanced eyes picked up immediately the mans concern and something stirred inside of her, she felt as if she should do something to ease his worry but these feelings vanished as she felt a burning sensation in her throat.
It was like nothing she had ever felt before and the sensation frightened her, she sat up with what she thought would be normal speed only she did it in a fraction of a second. Esme blinked with surprise, this must be some kind of test God was setting for her. That was the only solution she could come up with for why these strange things seemed to be happening to her. She wanted the burning in her throat to stop, her instincts told her she needed to do something to stop the feeling but Esme couldn’t understand what she had to do.
Esme’s enhanced ears picked up a loud crash, it sounded so close to her although it was probably was coming from outside. A falling tree perhaps? Whatever it was the noise made her jump, and she jumped back away from the man towards the furthest wall. She did it with such speed that if you blinked you would have missed it. She crashed against the wall shaking the whole house, bits of plaster flaked down from the roof. It was lucky for the houses sake that Esme was rather delicate in her nature and hadn’t hit the wall with her full strength.
She turned her eyes suspiciously on the man in the room, she was confused, her throat hurt and she couldn’t remember much. She needed someone to tell her everything was all right and this was just some horrible nightmare. The mans scent drifted to her, he smelt of soap and some kind of disinfectant, although it wasn’t unpleasant. The scent triggered a brief memory; she was in hospital stood clutching her stomach as a nurse rushed around her. “Its time Esme” the nurse beamed at her as Esme cried out as the labour pains doubled…
Esme’s face was a picture of confusion as she tried to deal with these new memories, “what’s happening to me?” she asked surprised by how her voice chimed, it sounded almost unearthly and most certainly nothing like how her voice had ever sounded before.

The only thing that was disapointing about the change in Esme was the fact that her heartbeat was gone. It had been a comforting noise while he had been treating her broken leg after her fall from the tree, and now it was not there. The good things though, is that she was like himself now, and would hopefully stay with Edward and him for a while at least. But as she sat up, to fast for a human to see, she seemed to startle herself and a tiny smile of compassion flickered across his lips. He watched her gracefully, if not gently, run into the side of the house and almost laughed until his eyes found their way to her face.
Her expression was one of confusion and that made Carlsile snap back to the task at hand. He moved slowly around the bed and sat on the edge of the thick matress nearest to her. Her strength as a newborn would be more than his, but if need be he was confident that he could protect himself if need be. He highly doubted that need would come though. The vaunerable look was enough to melt his heart (metaphorically speaking) and he patted the spot on the bed next to him as a signal for her to join him. If she didnt he would not be surprised, and if she left that day he would understand, but she needed to know whhat had happened to her, and how to avoid the every hungry rule of the Volturi. As if she knew what he was thinking she asked him the perfect question.
"What is happening is that you have changed, Esme."
The words were spoken softly, but he knew that she could hear his voice. She was, indeed a vampire after all.
"If you dont remember me, my name is Dr. Carlisle Cullen. I treated your broken leg a few years back when you fell from a tree. But dont bother with the Dr. part, and please dont call me Mr. Cullen. Carlisle will do for now."
He watched her closly for any change in emotion to know what was safe or not to say. Soon, as he could see in her body language he would have to explain to her how she needed to stay alive, and the ways that she could do so, but for now he had to convince her that she was no longer human.
"What has happened to you, Esme, is that you are no longer human. You, my dear, are now like myself. You are different in so any ways and you must be taught the new rules of this world by someone, and I can do that for you if you would like.
He hoped that she would consider staying for a short time, at least, to let him study her more closly and learn more about newborn vampires. First she had to be told that she was a vampire, and although he knew she would be skeptical for a short while, she would learn quickly what she really was. So without further ado, the dreaded words cam firmly, but kindly, out of his mouth.
"Esme, you are now a vampire."

Hell On Earth
As Esme watched the man in the room with her she noticed his compassionate expression, he seemed completely calm which confused Esme even more. She most certainly wasn’t calm, she was afraid, worried, and ever so confused about everything that was happening to her. He walked slowly, gracefully to the bed and sat down. His movement stirred some distant memory, she remembered him now. He had moved God like, treated her with such care. Esme had only been sixteen but the young doctor had captured her heart, she had wondered after he had left if he knew how much he had affected her. She hadn’t forgotten him even after everything that had happened to her, his face stayed in her memory.
And now, he sat before her looking exactly has he had done almost ten years ago perfectly calm acting as if this kind of thing happened everyday.
"What is happening is that you have changed, Esme."
Esme blinked as she watched him carefully, what did he mean changed? She knew her body was working completely differently to how it was now but she still felt the same, well apart from her sheer confusion and the burning feeling in her throat that was becoming unbearable. "If you dont remember me, my name is Dr. Carlisle Cullen. I treated your broken leg a few years back when you fell from a tree. But dont bother with the Dr. part, and please dont call me Mr. Cullen. Carlisle will do for now."
Yes, it was him, she remembered it all now, the pictures in her head were blurred but she remembered him. She noted that he’d left room for her to sit by him, although she didn’t understand what he was getting at she felt comfortable in his presence. She moved, again too quickly for the human eye to see, to his side and sat down looking curiously at him.
"What has happened to you, Esme, is that you are no longer human. You, my dear, are now like myself. You are different in so any ways and you must be taught the new rules of this world by someone, and I can do that for you if you would like."
Esme frowned, what did he mean by ‘new rule’ what was happening? She had gathered that she was still on the same earth she’d tried to escape from yet things had changed so much. She listened intently to what he had to say, "Esme, you are now a vampire." At these words her eyes widened with shock as she studied Carlisle to see if he was speaking the truth, in Esme’s eyes vampires were creatures of darkness. They were evil, but she didn’t feel evil, she felt the same only she found if difficult to control her body.
She didn’t doubt his word, it explained how he still looked exactly the same as he had when she’d first met him as a young girl, however she didn’t get the impression he was evil like the vampires she had read about in books.
“Am I Evil?” she asked quietly, would she turn into a monster? Already the instinctive feeling to quench the burning sensation in her throat was strong and Esme just wanted the feeling to stop. “My throat hurts” she said embarrassed with how she sounded but she wanted to understand what her body was telling her to do. She paused before continuing as the questions reeled in her head, “Why have I been turned?” she asked, slight regret in her voice as she realized she would be on this earth longer than she had anticipated or wanted.

Not surprised when Esme came and sat next to him on the bed, Carlisle relaxed even more. She was calm, and he could tell that she had made the connection between him now and ten years ago. But the hard part about this was that there was no way for her to escape life now, and for a while she had wanted to get out enough that she would kill herself for to leave. As she was, though, no one else coulld ever hurt her again, espically her rat of a husband.
The thing that surprised him the most was the way that she seemed to accept her change so easily. She wasnt going to go out and expieriment as Edward had. It didnt look like she was going to go ravage some poor humans as Edward had, and it certainly seemed that she would be staying here for the time being. Planning to take her out to hunt later, after he explained how he lived, he turned as she began to talk.
“Am I Evil?”
The words were so unexpected that a small smile crept onto his lips. Looking at this petite woman, or vampire, or whatever, he would not picture an less evil being anywhere.
"You certainly are not evil, Esme. You could be, in fact, better than you ever were as a human. You see, the way Edward and I live is different from others of our kind. Vampires do live off of blood, but it doesnt have to be from humans."
He let this sit for a moment, and when she said that her throat hurt he figured he could continue explaining.
"We can survive off the blood of animals. It is not as good, but it sustains us and we get along fine. It also allows up so interact with humans and their society, and that gives me the chance to be a doctor. Of course I have been working up my immunity to the scent of human blood for a long, long time now."
Watching her face for any kind of reaction Carlsile sat back and waited for her reply, or questions. If she felt that she wanted to go off and take the life of a human she would have nothing stopping her. But if se wanted to stay she would be welcomed by himself, of not Edward, with open arms.
"As for the burning in your throat, that simply means you are thirsty. And your eyes are, and will be for a few months, red, so please consider this before you look in a mirror so you dont freak out and break anything." He smiled as he said this and then one last thought popped to mind. "Oh, and by the way, you are virtually indestructable and very, very strong now, so go easy on the house."

Hell On Earth
Esme didn’t question Carlisle; she had this strong sense of security around him and when she looked at him she felt as if he would never lie, he had an extremely honest face. Esme accepted it easily, to be honest it made perfect sense, it explained why Carlisle still looked the same as he had when she was sixteen. It explained the strange new things her body was doing, and if it wasn’t real and her head had made all this up or she really was in some strange kind of heaven or hell it didn’t really matter. Did it?
The question was, what would she do now that she was on this earth for good, she tried not to think about the things that had made her commit suicide but her mind kept bringing the painful and confusing memories back. How could she live forever with these images in her head? She waited quietly for Carlisle to answer her questions; the burning sensation was becoming even worse and Esme was starting to get a bit edgy.
Esme listened as Carlisle explained how they lived; it comforted her to know that she didn’t need to be a killer, a murderer. Esme didn’t want to hurt anyone, she hated violence, towards the end of her life as a human she had been subjected to abuse by her husband and she didn’t understand why people had to be so hurtful to each other. Everyone has control over their actions, so why be so hurtful when you didn’t need to be?
Esme smiled as she looked at Carlisle, “I don’t want to hurt anyone, I don’t want to be a killer” she said firmly, “don’t let me be a killer". Esme held his gaze, she was determined to be good, she wasn’t going to hurt anyone, she wasn’t going to be that person that killed and hurt people for their own satisfaction.
“As for the burning in your throat, that simply means you are thirsty. And your eyes are, and will be for a few months, red, so please consider this before you look in a mirror so you dont freak out and break anything. Oh, and by the way, you are virtually indestructible and very, very strong now, so go easy on the house."
Esme smiled, her new enhanced eyesight fascinated her, she could see every flicker on emotion on Carlisles face, every hair on his head and his chiselled handsome features never looked more perfect. Esme couldn’t believe the detail she had missed when she was human on his face. She looked up ate the ceiling, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt the wall…” she said, rather embarrassed by her mistake.
Esme’s hand moved to her throat as she rubbed it trying to sooth the burning, she didn’t understand how Carlisle managed to bare the sensation, did it last all the time? “Are there lots of other vampires?” she asked, “Are they like you? Or do they…eat..humans?” she asked as she rubbed her throat, it didn’t really help but she felt by doing something it distracted her slightly from the pain.

“I don’t want to hurt anyone, I don’t want to be a killer” she said firmly, “don’t let me be a killer".
The concern in her voice was reassuring to Carlisle. From that moment on he knew that she would be staying and he was going to do all that was in his power to keep her safe - and keep humans safe- from herself. He would never let her be a mindless killer like some other vampires and he would make sure of that.
"I promise that I will do all that I can to keep you from killing anyone."
He meant it, too. Besides, she didnt seem like she could be that way anyway. But she was a vampire and that meant that the draw of human blood would still be as enticing as before. Then the questions began to come.
“Are they like you? Or do they…eat..humans?”
That was the reality of being a vampire, and nno matter what happened she would have to find out sooner or later. So he dicided to explain a lot of it to her now.
"There are quite a few others. We run into them from time to time, but most are different from us. By different I mean that they do eat humans. Its their nature. But me, I couldnt do it. I made the personal choice to not kill and never killed one human. Edward was different. He slipped up quite a bit in his early years and killed plenty of people, so if you do ever make a mistake dont feel bad."
Not going to far into everything he watched her for a moment. Noticing that she seemed almost edgy he realized that she must be thirsty. Standing in one fluid movement, a vampire movement, the first she had seen of him and had the door open in less than a second.
"Before I explain anything else you need to eat. We are out away from people and I checked to make sure that no humans are near the area. As long as we head away from town and temptation you should be fine."
